product reviews: oyin handmade

oyin handmade honey wash.
ingredients:  saponified organic oils of coconut, olive, and jojoba, glycerine/vegetable gum extract, organic aloe vera gel, honey, jojoba oil, walnut oil, grapefruit seed and green tea extracts, rosemary extract, fragrance... and love!

verdict:  honey is bee vomit (and poop).  this shampoo smells like vomit. the scent is the antithesis of awesome and this is one of those sulfate-free shampoos that won't lather unless you use the entire bottle.  i would not repurchase this wash.  not even on sale.

oyin handmade honey hemp conditioner.
ingredients: purified water, organic aloe vera gel, behentremonium methosulfate (and) cetearyl alcohol (emulsifier derived from colza oil), honey, virgin hemp oil, coconut oil, vegetable glycerine, hydrolized silk, citrus essences, fragrance, optiphen (preservative)... and LOVE! ;o)

verdict:  the scent is light and citrus-y.  the slip and moisture are adequate.  i enjoyed my first bottle so much that i purchased three more. the thing about "handmade" products is that they can be inconsistent. product from the last two bottles would sting my scalp if left in too long.

this contains a fatty alcohol and glycerine (which is an alcohol) and, regardless of whether the alcohol is fatty or not, i believe that it caused my hair to dry out. in the beginning it was fine, but after repeated use, i noticed that my ends felt dry and crunchy.  my new rule is that the top five ingredients must natural (water, oils, butters, etc.).  alcohols and derivatives are pretty difficult to ban from a regimen, but they must be way down the list of ingredients.  i would not repurchase this conditioner.

oyin handmade hair dew.
ingredients: purified water, ricinus communis (castor) oil, olea europaea (olive) oil, aloe barbadensis leaf juice (organic), olea europaea (olive) oil, behentrimonium methosulfate (and) cetearyl alcohol (emulsifier derived from colza oil), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, cetyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol (and) caprylyl glycol (preservative), squalane (from olive oil), fragrance, and love!
combed out roller set using hair dew and burnt sugar pomade

verdict: filled with moisture and humectants, this leave-in provides good slip and softness. the scent is awesome...like cotton candy, but the excessive humectants are not moisture friendly in my dry climate. this works very well when wearing heat-styled hair (like a roller set).

one rainy, humid day, i applied it and sealed with the burnt sugar pomade for a wash and go.  my coils are naturally defined; so, i skipped gel.  the combo left my hair super soft, but my canopy area lost definition...as it usually does.  both of the products are filled with humectants; so, don't expect much hold.  if definition is a big deal, gel is your friend.

i'll continue to purchase a bottle every now and again because all of the ingredients in the top five are natural and i absolutely love the scent.

oyin handmade burnt sugar pomade.
ingredients: castor oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, organic virgin coconut oil, mango seed oil, olive oil, unrefined hempseed oil, candelilla wax, cocoa butter, broccoli seed oil, fragrance... and love!

verdict:  i use this pomade mostly for smoothing down my hairline.  it emulsifies easily in my hands and smells sweet like caramel.  it doesn't have much hold, but if i tie down my hair with a silk scarf, my hairline remains smooth all day.

i like this pomade, but  i would like to eliminate waxes from my regimen.  the wax in this one is number eight; so, i don't feel too bad about it.  this pomade isn't a staple, but i keep a container on deck because i don't like to use gels or edge tamers on my hairline (even though i do from time to time).

oyin handmade after bath.
ingredients: vitamin e, olive, virgin coconut, jojoba, avocado, sweet almond, wheat germ, rice bran, mango, sunflower, walnut and black seed oils.

verdict:  the oils in this oil blend are upper echelon.  this blend works well for sealing moisture into my hair.  it does leave my hair shiny on its own...most oils don't.  i purchased the unscented version, but i'd like to try one of the scents.

oyin handmade whipped pudding.
ingredients:  water, shea butter, organic aloe vera gel, cocoa butter, castor oil, coconut oil, sweet almond & olive oils, vegetable emulsifier, beeswax, palm stearic acid, vegetable glycerine, honey, optiphen (preservative), fragrance.

verdict:  for skin, the texture tends to be a little waxy and difficult to emulsify, but it leaves my skin smooth, shiny and moisturized all day long.  plus it has a long lasting cocoa butter scent.

for hair, it tends to leave a chalky, white cast on my wash and wear hair.  it works ok as a sealant, but i don't really seal my hair...most of my products contain enough oil to serve this purpose.  as a refresher, it leaves an oily film, but doesn't provide shine.
for me, this is best as a body product during winter months.  i haven't figured out the best way to use this in or on my hair.  i'd repurchase on sale.

oyin handmade shine & define.
ingredients:  water, linum usitatissimum (flax) seeds (organic), aloe barbadensis leaf juice (organic), sea vegetable complex, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, unrefined butyrospermum parkii (shea butter) fruit, raw honey, vegetable glycerin, stearic acid (from palm), emulsifying wax NF (vegetable derived), fruit pectin, xanthan gum, dextrose, phenoxyethanol (and) caprylyl glycol (preservative), citrus limonum (lemon) peel oil, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil; fragrance.

verdict:  i'm not really sure what this product is supposed to do.  it works well to slick my hair back for a puff, but otherwise not versatile enough to style my wash and wear hair. plus, i don't like the citrus scent.  i will not repurchase.

oyin handmade boing!
ingredients:  water; unrefined butyrospermum parkii (shea fruit) butter; behentremonium methosulfate (and) cetearyl alcohol; polyquaternium-10; vegetable glycerin; Hydroxypropyltrimonium honey; quaternium-91 (and) behentrimonium chloride (and) myristyl myristate (and) cetearyl alcohol; cocos nucifera (coconut) oil; cetyl alcohol; chondrus crispus (irish moss), simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, optiphen (preservative), fragrance, and love!

verdict:  my third impression is that boing! is best applied to wet, not damp or moist hair.  for my wash and wear style, boing! is very inconsistent.  more often than not, i'm left with a chalky, flakey snowball of a mess.  with a leave-in, i often get pesky white balls of product caught in the ends of my coils.  however, i absolutely must use a leave-in (kckt or hair dew) with this styler.   it's extremely drying on its own.  i haven't figured out how to avoid flakes consistently.

to date, i've gotten pretty hair exactly one time, but i can't remember exactly what i did or how the climate was on that day.  the last time i used this product was for a roller set...it was flakey, but i was able to salvage the hair because i got a trim that day.  i will not repurchase this product.

oyin handmade honey water.
ingredients:  filtered water, aloe barbadensis leaf juice (organic), pure honey, vegetable glycerin, citrus grandees (grapefruit) seed extract, fragrance, polysorbate 20, and love!
verdict:  works well as a refresher or detangler.  very concentrated and maintains its power when diluted with water 50%.  smells like bumblebee vomit.  i will not repurchase.

oyin handmade greg juice.
ingredients:  aqueous infusion of shavegrass leaf, lavender buds, nettle leaf, chamomile flower, and red rose petals; organic flax seeds; organic aloe leaf juice; vegetable glycerin; lavender oil, orange peel oil, grapefruit seed extract; citric acid, and love!

verdict:  works well as a refresher or detangler.  very concentrated and maintains its power when diluted with water 50%.  very earthy scent that i do not like.  i will not repurchase.
