product review: sheamoisture coconut & hibiscus

Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo
Ingredients: Deionized Water, Dacyl Glucoside (Coconut Oil), Cocos Nucifera(Coconut) Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Vitamin E, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Seed Oil, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate (Coconut Oil),Panthenol (Vitamin B-5), Rosemary Extracts, Silk Protein, Proprietary Essential Oil Blend, Guar Gum, Stearic Acid, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower (and) Lonicera Japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle) Flower Extract

Verdict:  This was the best shampoo from SheaMoisture...before they began tinkering with formulas.  When Decyl Glucoside was derived from sugar beets, this was a moisturizing product.  It was creamy and I was able to detangle my hair with it almost as well as with conditioner.

The difference in the newer formula seems to be now that Decyl Glucoside is derived from coconut oil, this shampoo is stripping like any typical shampoo.  Some of the other newly formulated shampoos from SheaMoisture also contain cocamidopropyl betaine which, for my hair, is tantamount to using sulfates.  Nevertheless, one use of the Curl & Shine new formula left my hair a tangled, knotted mess.  I learned my lesson quickly and returned it.  I will not repurchase.

Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioner
Ingredients: Deionized Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut ) Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Sorbitol Esters, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter*, Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive ) Fuit Oil*, Cetyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B-5), Proprietary Essential Oil Blend, Silk Protein, Aloe Barbedenis Leaf Extract, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Seed Oil, Rosemary Extract, Caprylyl Glycol *Certified Organic Ingredients

Verdict:  This was one of my favorite conditioners.  The texture is light and the scent is amazing.  It works well to detangle my hair until I noticed that it was leaving my ends a bit dry and crunchy.  The ingredients, on the surface, seem spectacular; so I don't know which ingredient caused this malady.  The dryness happened over time and I eventually stopped purchasing this conditioner.  I will not repurchase.

Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk
Ingredients: Deionized Water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Sugar Starch, Silk Protein, Essential Oil Blend, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Seed Oil, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbitol Esters, Algae Extract, Hyssopus Officinalis Extract, Salvia Officinalis, (Sage) Leaf and Equistum Arvense Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower (and) Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Hibiscus Flower Extract *Certified Organic Ingredient

Verdict:  For a long while, I used this as a leave-in conditioner in conjunction with the styling mist to roller set my hair.  It worked well to detangle my hair and left me with a smooth, shiny roller set.  I've also tried it as a leave-in for my wash and wear styles, but it left a white cast on my hair.  I really like this product; so, I'll continue to experiment until I get to work for my wash and wear hair.  I'll continue to repurchase this milk during BOGO's.

Coconut & Hibiscus Hold & Shine Moisture Mist
Ingredients: Deonized Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut Oil)*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Silk Protein, Essential Oil Blend, Melia Azadirachia (Neem) Seed Oil, Behentrimonium Chloride (Conditioning Salt), Hyssopus Officinalis Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf and Equisetum Arvense Extract, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower (and) Lonicera Japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Hibiscus Flower Extract

Verdict:  For a long while, I used this as a setting lotion in conjunction with the styling milk roller set my hair.  The results were always smooth and shiny.  I've also used this to refresh my puff.  It works well for that purpose.  Currently, I'm experimenting with this as a holding agent for wash and wear styles.  No success so far, but I'm optimistic.

wash and puff with curl enhancing smoothie
Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie
Ingredients: Deionized Water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut ) Oil*, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Magnifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter*, Persea Gratissima (Avacado) Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Silk Protein, Ammonium Salt, Melia Azadiratcha (Neem) Seed Oil,Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed oil, Sorbitol Esters, Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B-5), Caprylyl Glycol, Essential Oil Blend, Lonicera Caprifolium (honeysuckle) Flower (and) Lonicera Japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Hibiscus Flower Extract

Verdict:  This smoothie works well when applied to freshly cleansed, soaking wet hair in the shower and immediately sealed with oil.  It gives me shiny (but not soft) hair with defined coils.  The effects are not long lasting...a day or two.  It also takes a few tries to determine the perfect amount of product and perfect weather conditions.  If the air is dry, this smoothie is drying.  It works best for me in slightly humid conditions; so, I don't consider it consistent enough to be a staple.  I will not purchase this smoothie again.  There are other products that work for me year round.

Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé
Ingredients: Aqueous Infusion of Agave Teqilana Leaf Extract and Sugar Cane Extract, Pectin, Vegetable Glycerin, Adansonia Digitata Pulp(Baobab) Extract, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B-5, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E - Vegetable Oil Source), Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed/Flax) Seed Extract, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Extract, Potassium Sorbate, Proprietary Essential Oil Blend *Certified Organic Ingredient

Verdict:  This is another product that only works well in optimal weather conditions.  Glycerin and dry air are mortal enemies to my hair.  I tried this on its own and it was either drying or drippy, slimy.  I tried this on top of the smoothie with a very light hand and that worked well in humid conditions, but the performance is not consistent enough for my climate.  I will not repurchase this gel.

Coconut & Hibiscus Kids Curling Butter Cream
Ingredients:  Deionized Water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter*, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Hibiscus Flower Extract, Vegetable Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Silk Protein, Centrimonium Chloride, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Seed Oil, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Sorbitol Esters, Panthenol (Pro-Vitmain B-5), Caprylyl Glycol, Citrus Medica Limonium, Citrus Aurantifolia, Jasminium Officinale, Slippery Elm Extract, Proprietary Essential Oil Blend, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) *Certified Organic Ingredient

Verdict:  Performs similarly to the Curl Enhancing Smoothie, but better.  Creamier.  Slightly more slip for easier application.  Glycerin is a little further down the list of ingredients.  I keep a container of this on deck at all times.

For the longest time, I applied this (and all) creams with a very heavy hand and sealed with oil.  My most successful use of this cream was on a day when I had a very small amount left.  I wasn't sure it would be enough to cover my entire head.  I applied it in the shower on soaking wet hair in sections with a very light hand and no oil.  It actually left my hair very moisturized with a bit of sheen.  However, the canopy of my hair has a hard time hold moisture; so, I usually apply extra product to that area.  The butter cream was gone; so, I applied a little bit of the Curl & Style Milk to that section.  Not only was it the best wash & go ever, but it made me rethink how I use products.  A thick, creamy product filled with oils should be able to stand alone...for me, this one does.

Coconut & Hibiscus Kids Extra-Moisturizing Detangler

Ingredients:  Deionized Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Vegetable Glycerine, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil, Hibiscus Flower Extract, Citrus Medica Limonium, Citrus Aurantifolia, Jasminium Officinale, Slippery Elm Extract, Essential Oil Blend, Behentrimonium Chloride (Conditioning Salt), Algae Extract, Hyssopus Officinalis Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf and Equisetum Arvense Extract, Althaea Officinalis Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) *Certified Organic Ingredients

Verdict:  Hated it.  Somewhere along the line, I realized that glycerine is not for me.  I will not purchase another product that contains glycerine in the top five ingredients.  I will not repurchase this detangler...which didn't really function well as a detangler on my hair.

Coconut & Hibiscus Bath, Body & Massage Oil
Ingredients:  Carthamus Tintorius (Safflower) Oil, Borage Officinalis Oil, Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Olea Europea (Olive) Oil*, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract

Verdict:  I will always love this oil blend.  It works well to seal moisture into my hair and skin.  I love the ingredients.  I love the scent.  I love the size of the container.  I love to pair it with hair products from the coconut & hibiscus line.

I love using massage oil in lieu of body lotions and butters because it absorbs quickly.  SheaMoisture's massage oils are totally slept on.  I will always repurchase/hoard SheaMoisture's massage oils.  Especially during BOGO's.

Coconut & Hibiscus Dry Oil Mist

Ingredients:  Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Diheptyl Succinate, Coco Capryloyl, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract,  Capryloyl Glycerin/ Sebacic Acid Copolymer, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Prunus  Amygdalus  Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Caprylic Capric Triglycerides, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract,  Laminaria Orchroleuca Extract, Tocopherols (Vitamin E) (Vegetable), Essential Oil Blend, Glyceryl Caprylate,  Glyceryl Undecylenate, Songyi Mushroom Extract

Verdict:  The oil mist is not as effective as massage oils.  I like the trajectory of the spray, but the mists are more lightweight.  Plus the containers are small. I will not repurchase.

Shea Butter infused with Coconut & Hibiscus

Ingredients: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Papain (Papaya Extraxt), Songyi Mushroom Extract, Tocopherol ( Vitamin E), Essential Oil Blend *Certified Organic Ingredient

Verdict:  Pretty scent.  Small container.  Soft texture.  Does a good job of sealing moisture into skin.  A little too thick for use in my hair.  I will not repurchase unless on clearance.
